A roof over the daily chores
The Well Shelter stands northeast of the main house, a simple gabled building of 1885 (Meiji 18) roofed in pantiles. Toward its western side is a well, and its water served the household's washing and similar work.
Covering a well in this way most likely let the family keep using it through the snowbound winters of the region. It is a small building with a plain, practical purpose, and it makes no pretence otherwise.
Why it was registered
Listed on 25 May 2000, the shelter was recognised as difficult to reproduce. Its value is not grandeur but testimony: it preserves a piece of the daily working life of a wealthy farming household that grander buildings leave out.
