Northern Culture Museum Sadokantei

A Tea House Built to Face Sado

The Northern Culture Museum Sadokantei (北方文化博物館佐度看亭, Sadokantei) in Somi, Konan Ward, Niigata City, is a single-storey timber tea house in sukiya style from the decade after 1945, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 April 2000.

The Northern Culture Museum Sadokantei sits on raised ground in the southwest corner of the estate. As its characters say, the Agency for Cultural Affairs explains, it was built to look toward Sado Island. It covers 64 square metres.

It was designed by the garden designer Tanaka Taiami, who created the stroll garden.

Farmhouse Outside, Clever Beams Within

The Northern Culture Museum Sadokantei was registered as a model of good design. The agency notes its plain farmhouse-like exterior and its skilful exposed beams inside, placing it in the lineage of modern Japanese buildings in farmhouse style.

It is a sukiya tea house dressed in rustic clothes. Because the garden's designer also designed the building, site, view and architecture were conceived together.

The museum says the garden tea houses were placed under Taiami's direction as part of the seventh head's plan for the garden.

High Ground and a Distant View

On an estate spread across the Kanbara plain, the Northern Culture Museum Sadokantei stands on raised ground in the southwest corner. The view toward Sado named in its title is its whole point.

Visiting the Sadokantei

The museum states that the tea houses in the garden are not open to the public, so the Northern Culture Museum Sadokantei is seen only from outside.
