A Plain Shelter over a Well

The Northern Culture Museum Well Hut (北方文化博物館井戸小屋, Idogoya) in Somi, Konan Ward, Niigata City, is a single-storey timber building of 1885, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 April 2000.

The Northern Culture Museum Well Hut stands northeast of the main house and covers 30 square metres. It is a simple building with a gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) pantile roof (Sangawara-buki), and a well lies inside toward its west end.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs says the well water was used for laundry and similar work, and that the well was probably enclosed so it could be used in winter.

A Glimpse of Everyday Work

The Northern Culture Museum Well Hut was registered as a building that would be difficult to reproduce. The agency sees it as a window onto the daily life of a great landowning household in this region.

Where the great hall was for entertaining, the well hut was for drawing water and washing. It speaks for the working side of a house said to have employed around 60 servants.

In snowy country, the agency's commentary implies, roofing over a well kept the work going through the winter.

A Café Around the Well

Today the Northern Culture Museum Well Hut is a café. The museum describes it as a café that keeps the Ito family's well inside, so you can sit and look at it.

Its plain gabled form contrasts with the formal main house and great hall, and its lack of ornament says plainly that this was a place of work.

Visiting the Well Hut

The Northern Culture Museum Well Hut is in the museum grounds, northeast of the main house. Café hours vary by season: the museum's restaurants page says it closes in winter and opens only on weekends and holidays from spring to autumn, while its October 2026 notice lists opening every day except museum closing days, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
