A Thatched House from Snow Country
The Northern Culture Museum Yoshigahira Folk House (北方文化博物館吉ヶ平民家, Yoshigahira Minka) in Somi, Konan Ward, Niigata City, is a single-storey thatched (Kayabuki) farmhouse of the late Edo period, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 April 2000.
The Northern Culture Museum Yoshigahira Folk House was moved to the museum grounds from Shitada Village (now part of Sanjo City) in central-eastern Niigata Prefecture. It stands in the northeast of the estate, just south of the Kariwa Folk House, another relocated farmhouse, and covers 97 square metres.
The museum says it preserves the two old farmhouses from Kariwa and Yoshigahira as part of its collection.
A Farmhouse Built for Heavy Snow
The Northern Culture Museum Yoshigahira Folk House was registered as a model of good design. It has a hipped (Yosemune-zukuri) thatched main block with a stable extending from it under a board roof weighted with stones.
Inside, it follows a three-room plan with raised wooden floors in the main living room and elsewhere, and its frame makes heavy use of inserted beams and through-ties. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points to the rows of posts along the outer walls as a mark of a house built for deep snow.
Stone-Weighted Boards and Close-Set Posts
