Northern Culture Museum Sanrakutei

A Triangular Study Designed by the Head of the Family

The Northern Culture Museum Sanrakutei (北方文化博物館三楽亭, Sanrakutei) in Somi, Konan Ward, Niigata City, is a single-storey timber study and tea room of 1891, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 28 April 2000.

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Northern Culture Museum Sanrakutei was designed after the main house was finished by Ito Bunkichi, then head of the family, and built by Saito Kinzo, the same master carpenter who built the main house. The museum says the sixth head drew it up at the age of 21. It has a copper roof and a building area of 38 square metres.

The museum explains that the name, "three pleasures", comes from Mencius's three joys of the virtuous man.

Everything in Triangles

The Northern Culture Museum Sanrakutei was registered as a building that would be difficult to reproduce. Its plan is a triangle 9 metres on a side, divided into triangular tea room and study and a rhombus-shaped main room.

The agency calls it a singular building based on the triangle, down to members cut into triangles and rhombuses. The museum adds that posts, tatami and even drawer fronts follow those shapes, and that the building has a preparation area and is used as a tea room.

On a triangular plan most junctions between members are not square, and each has to be cut to its own angle. Here the criterion of being difficult to reproduce has a very concrete meaning.

Rhombus Rooms and One Round Window

The thing to notice about the Northern Culture Museum Sanrakutei is how rarely a right angle appears. Trace the triangular rooms and the rhombus room, and the mats and posts cut to match, even from outside.

The museum says the building has a single round window, where the sixth head is said to have meditated: one circle among triangles and rhombuses.

The copper roof also sets it apart from the tiled buildings around it.

Visiting the Sanrakutei

The Northern Culture Museum Sanrakutei is within the museum grounds. During the autumn illumination of November 2025 it was lit for the first time as part of the foundation's 80th anniversary, and the museum stated that visitors could not enter it.

The museum does not publish whether the interior can be visited at other times. Ask at reception what can be seen, and keep photos and posts to personal use.
