The Former Saigane Elementary School Kitchen (旧西金小学校調理室, Kyū-Saigane Shōgakkō Chōrishitsu) is a single-story wooden cookhouse at Saigane in Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, built in 1956 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2018. Its building area is 42 square meters and the roof is gabled, laid in Sangawara-buki pantiles.
It sits at the north corner of the schoolhouse's entrance side, facing south, joined to the ground floor by a covered passage that turns through a right angle. Seen from the yard it reads as one small roof tucked against the long two-story school.
The finish sets it apart. Mortar covers the walls and continues over the eaves soffit, leaving no timber exposed, and the ceilings inside are boarded. Where the schoolhouse shows Shitami-itabari lapped boarding, the Former Saigane Elementary School Kitchen shows none. A room in which fire was lit every morning was treated differently, and the treatment is visible from outside.
The construction date comes from a Ministry of Education facility ledger. Since the schoolhouse frame went up in December 1956, work on the two buildings was running in parallel.
A building for school meals
Japan's School Lunch Act was promulgated in 1954, two years before this kitchen was built. Separate cooking blocks were appearing on elementary school grounds across the country in exactly those years, and the Former Saigane Elementary School Kitchen belongs to that moment.
Schooling at Saigane began with a village school in 1872 and opened formally as Saigane Ordinary Elementary School in 1891. The name Daigo Town Saigane Elementary School dates from 1957, when the new schoolhouse was completed, and the school closed in March 2005. The kitchen served roughly the last fifty years of that history.
Registration as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property came on May 10, 2018. The number is 08-0310 and the criterion cited is that of a work forming a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs values the kitchen, with the music and science block, as evidence of how an early postwar elementary school campus was arranged. The point is less the single building than the survival of all three together.
What to look for
Start with the size. At 42 square meters this is smaller than one classroom, the least of the three registered buildings on the site, and more than ten times smaller than the 533 square meter schoolhouse.
Then look under the eaves. The mortar does not stop at the wall head; it wraps the soffit as well. Open eaves are where fire climbs fastest in a timber building, and sealing them was a deliberate move. The contrast with the boarded schoolhouse of the same period makes the intention plain.
The kink in the covered passage is worth noticing too. Rather than meeting the school wall square on, it turns once before it arrives, which is what allowed the kitchen to stand at the north corner and still face south.
The roof uses pantiles rather than the heavier round-and-flat combination of formal architecture. Ordinary school work of the Showa era, and the small gable of the Former Saigane Elementary School Kitchen is a fair example of it.
Visiting
Daigo Town owns the Former Saigane Elementary School Kitchen, and the grounds have stayed in the town's educational use since the school closed. This is not a site open for tourism, the interior cannot be entered, and no opening hours or admission charges exist.
The outside can be examined from the road beyond the grounds. Children use the facility, so avoid entering the site or taking pictures in which people appear. By rail, Saigane Station on the JR Suigun Line lies about 200 meters to the south, roughly a 5 minute walk. It is unstaffed and the gaps between trains are long, so fix your return time before you arrive. Drivers follow National Route 118 along the Kuji River.
