A special-subject block on a raised terrace
The Former Saigane Elementary School Science Room and Music Room (旧西金小学校理科室及び音楽室, Kyū-Saigane Shōgakkō Rikashitsu oyobi Ongakushitsu) is a single-story wooden block of special-subject classrooms at Saigane in Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, built in 1964 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2018. Its building area is 188 square meters under a tiled roof.
Where it stands is the first thing to register. The block sits north of the schoolhouse on a terrace about 3 meters above the yard, its long axis running east to west and its face turned south. The ground falls southward across the site, so the step is the natural slope put to use.
An open-sided Geya lean-to along the south carries an outdoor corridor, and from the middle of that corridor a covered passage reaches across to the north end of the schoolhouse's upper floor. The height of the terrace lets a single-story building meet a two-story one on the level.
Inside, the eastern half is the music room and the western half the science room. Almost the whole of the north and south walls is glazed, bringing light into both.
What ordinary classrooms could not hold
The schoolhouse was finished in 1957, and the Former Saigane Elementary School Science Room and Music Room followed seven years later. Fixed benches, water supply, instruments and the noise that goes with them: these were gathered into a separate block rather than squeezed into the ordinary classroom range.
Schooling at Saigane began with a village school in 1872 and opened formally as Saigane Ordinary Elementary School in 1891. The renaming to Daigo Town Saigane Elementary School came with the new schoolhouse in 1957, and the school closed in March 2005. The special-subject block was therefore in service for about 40 years.
On the construction date, Daigo Town's own account cites the school's closing memorial volume and stops short of asserting it. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database gives 1964.
Registration as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property took effect on May 10, 2018. The number is 08-0309 and the criterion cited is that of a work forming a model of design. The Agency reads the block as evidence of how an early postwar elementary school campus was laid out, and that reading rests on the schoolhouse and the kitchen having survived alongside it.
What to look for
Approach from the south and there is more glass than wall. With both long elevations glazed, light crosses the rooms around the middle of the day. A pupil bent over a microscope and a pupil reading from a music stand both needed to work without switching on a lamp, and the window arrangement answers that.
The outdoor corridor has no walls, only posts and a roof. Air moves through it while the rain stays off. Children crossing from the schoolhouse walked its length to reach the music room at the east end or the science room at the west.
Look at how the covered passage lands. Because it meets the north end of the schoolhouse's upper floor, a single-story block and a two-story block join without a change of level. The 3 meter step was built into the plan instead of being handed to a staircase.
Set the numbers side by side and the hierarchy of the campus appears. The 188 square meters of the Former Saigane Elementary School Science Room and Music Room is roughly a third of the 533 square meter schoolhouse and something over four times the 42 square meter kitchen, which places it in the middle of the three.
Visiting
The Former Saigane Elementary School Science Room and Music Room is owned by Daigo Town, and the grounds have stayed in town educational use since the school closed. It is not open for tourism, the interior cannot be visited, and no opening hours or admission charges have been set.
The exterior can be seen from the road outside the grounds, though the terrace position puts the schoolhouse in the way from some angles. Children attend the facility, so avoid entering the site or taking pictures in which people appear. No photography rules have been published; to check in advance, contact the Lifelong Learning Section of the Daigo Town Board of Education on 0295-72-1148.
Saigane Station on the JR Suigun Line is the nearest stop, about 200 meters to the south and roughly a 5 minute walk. Services are sparse at this unstaffed station, so look up the return time before you set out. Drivers take National Route 118 along the Kuji River.
