A timber schoolhouse of 1957
The Former Saigane Elementary School Building (旧西金小学校校舎, Kyū-Saigane Shōgakkō Kōsha) is a wooden two-story schoolhouse at Saigane in Daigo Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, completed in 1957 and listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2018. It covers a building area of 533 square meters beneath a tiled Kirizuma-zukuri roof.
The plot backs onto a hillside that drops away toward the south. Saigane's schoolhouse runs north to south with its entrance front turned east, angled a little southward. Both floors are clad in Shitami-itabari, lapped horizontal boarding, and the board lines carry across the whole elevation except at the middle, where the entrance bay is finished in mortar. That one panel splits the front into a northern half and a southern half.
The plan puts a single corridor along the west side, with classrooms ranged on the east, facing the schoolyard. A fire door stands inside the entrance bay and cuts the long corridor into two lengths, so the division read on the outside is repeated within.
A ridge tag (Munafuda) records the raising of the frame on December 14, 1956. The building was finished the year after and opened as the schoolhouse of Daigo Town Saigane Elementary School.
132 years of schooling, and why the building was registered
Teaching at Saigane goes back to 1872, when a terakoya, a village school of the old sort, was organized in a private house in the hamlet. A formal opening as Saigane Ordinary Elementary School followed on October 11, 1891, and a higher course was added in 1894. The name changed repeatedly after that: Shimoogawa First National School in 1941, Shimoogawa First Elementary School in 1947, and Daigo Town Shimoogawa Elementary School in 1955, after administrative districts were redrawn.
The Saigane name came back in 1957, when the new building was finished and the school was renamed to match. The Former Saigane Elementary School Building is that structure. The school closed in March 2005, 132 years after its beginnings.
Japan's postwar school system was introduced in 1947, which places this schoolhouse ten years into the new arrangement. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it a well-kept example of the form elementary schools took in those first years, altered very little since. It became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on May 10, 2018, under registration number 08-0308, cited for the criterion of a work forming a model of design.
What to look for
Stand in the yard on the east side and the two-story wall runs further than one glance takes in. At 533 square meters of floor area this is a large timber school, and the long ridge stretches the roofline out with it.
The eye stops at the center. Lapped boarding covers the rest of the wall; the entrance bay alone is smooth mortar, and the horizontal rhythm breaks there. Behind that panel is the fire door dividing the corridor. Fire safety, not composition, produced the detail that gives the front its shape.
The corridor's position on the west repays a moment's thought. Classrooms open east and catch the morning light, which matters on a plot with a slope at its back.
Two more registered buildings share the grounds with the Former Saigane Elementary School Building. The science room and music room block stands on a terrace to the north, about 3 meters above the yard, and the kitchen occupies the north corner of the entrance front. Covered passages link both to the schoolhouse. The three were registered separately, but they were laid out as one campus.
Visiting
The Former Saigane Elementary School Building belongs to Daigo Town and has remained in educational use since the school closed. It is not a visitor attraction. The interior is closed, and there are no opening hours or admission charges.
The exterior can be seen from the public road outside the grounds. Children attend the facility, so please do not enter the site or take photographs in which people appear. Saigane Station on the JR Suigun Line is the nearest stop, roughly 200 meters to the south and about a 5 minute walk. The station is unstaffed and trains toward Mito and toward Koriyama are infrequent, so check the timetable before setting out. Drivers use National Route 118, which follows the Kuji River along the valley floor. We could not confirm that visitor parking is available.
