A Legacy of Healing: The Ichikawa Family and Their Tosa Roots

The Ichikawa family has deep roots in Tosa Province, the historical name for present-day Kochi Prefecture. According to local records, the family accompanied the feudal lord Yamauchi Kazutoyo when he transferred from Kakegawa Castle in present-day Shizuoka Prefecture to govern Tosa in 1601. Serving as goten-i (palace physicians) to the Tosa domain, the Ichikawa family maintained a tradition of medical practice spanning several centuries. The clinic building that survives today was constructed around 1913, during the early Taisho period, when Western medical practices and architectural styles were rapidly spreading throughout Japan, even to its most remote corners.

Why It Was Registered as a Cultural Property

The Former Ichikawa Clinic was registered as a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property (building) in February 2012, along with the adjacent Former Kashiwabara Residence. The registration recognizes the building's contribution to the historical landscape of Japan. As a single-story wooden structure with weatherboard (shitami-ita) siding in the Western style, the clinic represents a valuable example of early Taisho-era provincial medical architecture. Such buildings were once common across rural Japan, as local doctors adopted Western-style facades to project modernity and trustworthiness, but very few have survived intact into the present day. The combination of this Western-style clinic and the adjacent traditional Japanese residence creates an architectural ensemble that is considered uniquely rare within Kochi Prefecture and beyond.

One of the most remarkable features of this property is its physical connection to the adjacent Former Kashiwabara Residence through a traditional earthen-floored passage (doma). This architectural union of a Western-style clinic and a traditional Japanese merchant house creates a harmonious blend of East and West that is exceptionally rare. The Kashiwabara Residence showcases traditional Tosa architecture with its lime-plastered walls (Tosa shikkui), intricate transom carvings (ranma), and generous use of natural timber from the nearby Yanase forests, famed for producing some of the finest cedar and cypress in Japan.

Together, these two buildings form the Yasuda Machinami Koryukan Nagomi, a community exchange center that now serves as a gateway to local history and culture. Inside, visitors can explore permanent exhibitions dedicated to notable figures from the Bakumatsu (late Edo) and Meiji Restoration periods who hailed from Yasuda, including Takamatsu Junzo, the brother-in-law of the legendary samurai Sakamoto Ryoma, and Ishida Eikichi, a Tosa loyalist who fought alongside Ryoma in the Kaientai naval force.

The Former Ichikawa Clinic is situated within the atmospheric old merchant quarter of Yasuda Town, a district that prospered historically as a timber distribution hub. Logs harvested from the dense forests of the Yanase region upstream were floated down the Yasuda River to this town, attracting merchants and fostering economic vitality. Remnants of this prosperous past can still be seen in the traditional townhouses, old storefronts, and atmospheric streetscape that line the roads around the clinic.

Yasuda Town also offers a wealth of nearby attractions. The pristine Yasuda River, one of the few undammed rivers in Japan, is celebrated for its crystal-clear waters and excellent ayu (sweetfish) fishing. The Tosatsuru Sake Brewery, one of Kochi's most renowned sake producers, has its headquarters here. Access and Transportation

Yasuda Town is accessible via the Tosa Kuroshio Railway Gomen-Nahari Line. From Yasuda Station, the Nagomi exchange center is approximately an 11 to 15-minute walk. Alternatively, take the Kochi Tobu Kotsu bus to the Yasuda Yakuba-dori stop, from which the center is a 3-minute walk. By car, the town is about one hour east of the Nankoku Interchange on the Kochi Expressway, via National Route 55 along the scenic Tosa Bay coastline.
