A Gate That Was Also a Place to Live
The Former Nakashichi Cotton Main Store Nagayamon Gate is a single-storey timber gate range at 28-1 Okada Kaito in Chita, Aichi Prefecture, built around 1914 (Taisho 3) and entered on the national register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 28 June 2017 (Heisei 29). It encloses the southern and eastern edges of the grounds of a cotton company that once ran twenty-four powered looms in this village.
A Nagayamon is a gate built into a long low building, so that the passage through it is flanked by rooms rather than by plain walls. Samurai residences used the form for retainers' quarters; farming households used it for stables and stores. The Former Nakashichi Cotton Main Store Nagayamon Gate applies the same idea to an industrial employer, and the rooms it contains are the ones a workforce needs.
The plan turns a right angle. One range runs east to west, the other north to south, and together they wrap two sides of the site. The east-west range has a frontage of 19 metres, with the gateway opening slightly toward its eastern end. Sheds occupy the bays on either side of the passage. The north-south range held the former dining room, the bathroom and the kitchen where meals were prepared.
That list is worth pausing over. Nakashichi Momen, founded in 1896 (Meiji 29) after the Nakajima family's cotton wholesale business closed, employed workers who did not go home at the end of a shift. Feeding them and letting them wash were building problems, and this gate is where those problems were solved. Its total floor area is 90 square metres.
Why It Was Registered

That criterion is applied to buildings whose value lies less in individual design than in what they do to a street. The wall treatment carries that job. Lime plaster covers the upper wall; horizontal boarding protects the lower part, where splashed rainwater and passing carts would have done damage. The combination is practical and it is also what gives the range its weight. It reads as heavier than a timber building of one storey has any right to look.
Five other structures on the site were registered on the same day, and this one sits at the boundary between them and the public street. What to Look At
Stand at the corner where the two ranges meet. The right-angled plan is easiest to read from there, and you can see how the roof turns without breaking its line. The covering is Yosemune-zukuri with Sangawara-buki pantiles, hipped on all sides, which suits a long building that has to end cleanly at two different corners.
Look at where the gateway sits. It is not centred. The opening is set toward the east, which pushes the longer run of wall to the west and makes the range feel longer than 19 metres when approached from that direction. Whether the asymmetry was deliberate composition or simply a response to the yard behind, the effect on the street is the same.
Then look low. The boarded base runs continuously along the frontage, weathered to a grey-brown that changes with the season and the rain. Against the pale plaster above it, the line where the two materials meet draws the eye along the whole length of the building.
The wall that continues north from the gate is separately registered and steps down in three stages to follow the fall of the ground. Reading the gate and that wall as one continuous edge, rather than as two entries in a list, is the most useful thing a visitor can do here.
Visiting
The Former Nakashichi Cotton Main Store Nagayamon Gate faces a public lane and can be seen from outside at any hour without charge. The interior rooms are not open to visitors and the grounds are private, so please stay on the lane. Photography from the street is unrestricted, and the frontage is easiest to photograph in the afternoon, when light rakes along the boarding.
Part of the compound operates as Chita Momen Antenna Shop 478, selling cloth and household goods woven from Chita cotton. Hours are 10:00 to 16:00, closed Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, telephone 0562-55-3239. Visiting on an open day is the only reliable way to see anything of the site beyond its outer walls.
For public transport, take the Meitetsu Tokoname Line to Asakura Station and a Chita Bus service to the Daimon-mae stop, from which the gate is about one minute on foot. Drivers should leave the Nishi-Chita Sangyo Road at the Nagaura interchange, around five minutes away, and use the visitors' car park provided for the Okada district.
The lane is narrow and carries local traffic, so keep to one side when framing a photograph. Walking the district takes about an hour and passes black board fences, plastered storehouses and a post office building of 1902 that is still in business.
