A Spanish-Style Hall in Shirakabe

The Kinjo Gakuin High School Eikokan (金城学院高等学校榮光館) is a school assembly hall of 1936 in Shirakabe, Higashi Ward, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on December 11, 1998 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a three-storey reinforced-concrete building with a building area of 800 square metres; registration number 23-0016.

A Hall for the Whole School

The Eikokan was planned to be large enough for all the students to gather at once, was rebuilt with donations from people connected with the school, and also serves as the chapel (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency records the Japanese architects of its basic and working designs and its builder.

According to the school's magazine, it was completed as the main assembly hall in 1936. A bombing raid on January 23, 1945 tore a hole near the third-floor stairs, and the hall was patched up after the war. In 1948 Helen Keller gave a lecture here.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency singles out the neat Spanish-style exterior, with red Spanish roof tiles and white walls, and registered it as a model of design.

What to Look For
