Mandaraji Temple at a Glance

Mandaraji Temple (曼陀羅寺) in Maehibo-cho, Konan City, Aichi Prefecture, is a temple of the Seizan Jodo sect; its main hall (shodo), rebuilt in 1632, and its mid-Edo shoin are each designated an Important Cultural Property. Known locally as Mandaraji of Hibo, it is described by Konan City as the most prestigious sacred site in northern Owari.

According to the city, it was founded by Tenshin Joun, eighth son of Fujiwara no Morotsugu and uncle of Emperor Go-Daigo; at the emperor's request its halls were built, the main hall modelled on the Shishinden of the imperial palace, and completed in 1329. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it was first called Enpukuji. The grounds cover 13,000 tsubo, with the cypress-bark-roofed main hall at the centre, kitchen, great and small shoin and other halls around it, and eight subtemples.

The Main Hall and Shoin

The main hall was rebuilt in 1632 by Hachisuka Iemasa, lord of Awa, who had studied as a child at the subtemple Honseiin (Konan City). The Agency values it as an interesting survival whose plan and simple structure reflect the tradition that it was modelled on the Shishinden.

The shoin, a reception building behind the main hall, dates from 1663 to 1674 in the Agency's records. In the Edo period it was used to entertain the shogun's inspectors, and Ikeda Terumasa and others are said to have held a council of war here during the Sekigahara campaign of 1600 (Konan City). The main hall was designated in 1957 and the shoin in 1962.

The Wisteria Festival and Visiting

Part of the grounds was laid out as Mandaraji Park, famous for about 60 wisteria vines of 11 varieties (Konan City). According to the Konan Tourism Association, the Konan Wisteria Festival is held from late April to early May; in 2026 it ran from April 17 to May 3 under trellises covering 4,700 square metres and up to 75 metres long, with free shuttle buses and temporary parking.

No official information was found on access to the interiors of the main hall or shoin. Mandaraji Park, the festival venue, is at 202 Teramachi, Maehibo-cho, Konan City (Konan Tourism Association).
