Otani Family Residence

The Otani Family Residence (大谷家住宅) at the foot of Mount Hongu in Ashiyamadacho, Toyokawa City, Aichi Prefecture, has a main house, storehouse and corridor of 1916 and a rice store of about 1928 that were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on October 27, 2017 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Four Structures

The main house, facing west, is a two-storey timber house whose rooms lie either side of a formal entrance along a central corridor, framed in thick, fine timber said to come from the family's own hills. The storehouse in the north-east corner has a namako-tiled front and black-plastered window frames, a sukiya-style corridor links it to the house, and a fire-resistant concrete rice store stands on the south side of the site (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each is described on its own page.
