What is Zenryuji Temple Main Gate?
Zenryuji Temple Main Gate (善立寺山門, Zenryūji Sanmon) is the entrance gate to a Nichiren-school temple in Yukincho, Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, built in the early Meiji era between about 1868 and 1882 and entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 17 November 2015. Timber-framed with a tiled roof, it measures 3.2 metres across the opening and has wing walls to either side. It stands at the southwest corner of the grounds, facing west.
The type is the kōraimon. A lintel beam runs across the tops of the two main posts, carrying a short gabled roof above. Behind each main post stands a rear strut, and each of those takes a small roof of its own. That arrangement, a narrow principal roof with secondary roofs over the rear supports, is what separates the kōraimon from other gate types. Okazaki City describes the form as one specific to castle architecture.
Among the four registered buildings at the temple, the gate alone is classified by the Agency for Cultural Affairs under structures rather than buildings; the main hall, Shichimen hall and entrance hall all fall under the latter. The distinction is administrative, separating gates and walls from roofed buildings, but it is worth knowing when reading the records.
Why Zenryuji Temple Main Gate was registered
Zenryuji Temple Main Gate became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 17 November 2015, under the criterion of contribution to the historic character of the national landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes an archaic form suggesting a castle gate, giving weight to the frontage of the temple grounds.
That impression comes out of the proportions. The small wall panel above the lintel is unusually shallow, so the roof sits low and the gate spreads sideways rather than standing tall. The principal roof and the eaves over the rear struts are set at the same height, which means the two roofs line up without a step and the outline reads as a single horizontal. The dimensions push the structure down and outward instead of up.
The doors deserve attention too. Their lower portion is a boarded panel sheathed in copper; the upper portion is an open lattice of heavy bars. Closed below and open above, they shut the way while letting sound and movement through. The comparison with a castle gate rests as much on this texture as on the silhouette.
Okazaki City records that the temple moved to its present site in 1647, when the domain lord Mizuno Tadayoshi reorganised the castle town. A temple placed inside a castle town, then acquiring a gate in castle form during the Meiji era, carries something of the history of the ground it sits on.
What to look for at Zenryuji Temple Main Gate
The gate faces west. Standing before it, the figure of 3.2 metres registers as narrower than expected, roughly enough for two people abreast. It still looks heavy, and the reason is the low roof working together with the wing walls on either side.
The roof is laid in sangawara pantiles. The main posts are rectangular in section while the rear struts are square with chamfered corners, so thickness and finish differ between them. Boards fill the space between the main posts, and arms project forward and back from posts and boards to carry the purlins. Walking through and looking straight up puts that joinery directly overhead.
Turn around once you are inside. From the courtyard side you can confirm that the eaves over the rear struts finish level with the principal roof. The alignment is easier to read from within than from the street.
Beyond Zenryuji Temple Main Gate the main hall stands ahead, with the Shichimen hall and the entrance hall to its left and right. Passing through an early Meiji gate on the way to a worship hall of 1734 is the natural sequence for seeing these grounds.
Visiting Zenryuji Temple Main Gate
Okazaki City lists the structure as open for exterior viewing. Since Zenryuji Temple Main Gate stands at the entrance to the grounds, it is the one of the four you can examine most closely. Stop for a moment and the copper sheathing on the doors and the lattice above it are visible in detail.
No admission fee or opening hours are published. No official rule on photography could be found, so ask before photographing the gate or the grounds. People pass through here every day, so stand clear of the opening while you look.
