The Main House of Kunibanzai Shuzo: A Brewer's Street Face on Akita's Old Coastal Highway
The Main House (Shuoku) of Kunibanzai Shuzo is the building the brewery shows to the world. It stands on the left bank of the Omono River in the Araya district of Akita City, along the old Ushu Hama Kaido, the coastal highway that once carried travellers and goods up the Japan Sea side of the country. Built in 1915, the fourth year of the Taisho era, it is the residence and public front of a sake house whose brewing rooms and storehouses stretch out behind it.
The form is a familiar one for a merchant family that also lived above the shop. It is a two-storey timber building, part single-storey, with a frontage of three and a half ken, roughly six and a half metres. The roof is hipped, and the entrance faces the gable end. A projecting eave runs across the front, and at its centre a small gabled porch marks the doorway. The plan is organised around a tori-doma, a through earthen-floored passage, with the accounts area and the main living room set along it.
Why It Carries a National Registration
The Main House is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property, the first of Kunibanzai Shuzo's seven registered buildings by number, 05-0123. All seven were entered on the register together on 10 November 2005. The registration system, created in 1996 for buildings around fifty years old or more, protects them with a light touch, unlike the older designation used for Important Cultural Properties and National Treasures.
It was listed for contributing to the historic landscape of the country, and the phrasing is apt. Araya grew wealthy on brewing, thanks to abundant spring water and river transport that brought good rice down the Omono. At its height the district held around a dozen breweries; today Kunibanzai's successor is the only one still working. The Main House anchors what survives of that streetscape, a line of merchant frontages that lets a walker read the shape of a Meiji and Taisho brewing town.
What to Look for on a Visit
Begin at the doorway. The gabled porch set into the long eave gives the house a clear centre and marks the threshold between the public road and the working interior. Step past it, in imagination or on a tour, and the tori-doma runs straight through the building; along it sit the choba, the raised accounts area where the family did business, and the oe, the main living room. This arrangement kept commerce and daily life under one roof, with the earthen passage doing the work of a corridor.
The house still functions as the face of a working brewery. Akita Shuzo, which grew out of Kunibanzai, keeps a shop and offers reserved tours from its Suirakuten outlet close by, where the sake made behind this frontage can be tasted. Seen from the old highway, the Main House and its neighbours give an unusually complete picture of how a provincial brewing family built to both live and trade.
