The Family's Strongroom
The Suzuki Sake Brewery Document Storehouse (鈴木酒造店文庫蔵, Suzuki Shuzōten Bunkogura) in Nagano, Daisen City, Akita Prefecture, is an earthen-walled storehouse built in 1896 at a working sake brewery, and became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 3 April 2020. It is a two-storey Dozo-zukuri building with a metal-sheet roof, covering 44 square metres, and was renovated in 1986.
It joins the southeast side of the office and main house and was built to hold the Suzuki family's possessions. Every other storehouse on the site served the brewing; this one guarded the household's valuables. The brewery's chronology says that in 1986 it rebuilt "two document storehouses" in preparation for a family museum; one document storehouse is registered.
Why It Was Registered
The Suzuki Sake Brewery Document Storehouse was registered as a building that would be hard to reproduce. It is the only one of the seven buildings at Suzuki Sake Brewery listed on that criterion.
The reason is the plasterwork. The door and windows are framed in torii-like surrounds finished in black plaster, with decorative motifs raised by trowel. Black plaster takes long hours of coating and burnishing, and modelling ornament into it is skilled work that is difficult to repeat at the same standard.
The interior shows a local method as well: posts set unusually close together for the size of the plan, with walls carefully finished in Shikkui lime plaster. The registration takes in that inner craftsmanship, not just the decoration on the outside.
Black Frames and Trowelled Motifs
Standing in front of the Suzuki Sake Brewery document storehouse, look first at the door and window surrounds. The torii-shaped frames are coated in black plaster that makes the openings stand out against the white walls, and the trowelled motifs shift in relief as the light moves.
Inside, notice how tightly the posts are spaced. For a plan of only 44 square metres there are a great many of them, marking the walls with close vertical lines.
Today the storehouse displays heirlooms of the Suzuki family. According to the brewery, they include the manuscript brewing chronicle kept since the Genroku era, a black-lacquered helmet, and a gold-work hairpin handed down as part of a bride's trousseau; the brewery also says the collection includes gifts from Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Oda Nobunaga.

The Suzuki Sake Brewery Document Storehouse is one of the buildings shown on Suzuki Sake Brewery's tour, and the official description names it specifically. The tour is paid and must be booked; you cannot wander in on your own. Ask the guide whether the exhibits may be photographed.
