What Is the Enomoto Family Residence Main Gate?
The Enomoto Family Residence Main Gate (榎本家住宅正門, Enomoto-ke Jūtaku Seimon) is the timber front gate of the Enomoto family estate in Fusa, Abiko City, Chiba Prefecture, a single-bay Yakuimon built in the early Showa era, between 1926 and 1945, that became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 3 December 2024.
The Main Gate faces south and stands back from the street, with a frontage of 2.8 meters. Abiko City's press release explains that it was dated to early Showa by comparing old photographs with the weathering of its timbers. Around 1958, when the Tone River levee was widened, the gate was moved to its present position by hikiya (曳家), together with the main house and other buildings.
How a Yakuimon Works
A yakuimon has 2 main posts at the front and 2 shorter back posts behind them, all sheltered by one gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof. The ridge usually sits forward of the main posts, so seen from the side the roof reaches well out over the entrance.
The Enomoto Family Residence Main Gate is a single-bay version with a roof of Sangawara-buki pan tiles. On either side runs a board fence capped with the same tiles, together forming the formal face of the estate.
Zelkova Posts and 3 Beams Overhead
The frame of the Enomoto Family Residence Main Gate is heavy, cut from fine zelkova (keyaki). Look up and you see how the roof is carried: a Kabuki lintel spans the main posts, a tie beam links the tops of the back posts, and 3 beams run front to back across the two. Those beams in turn support the eave purlins that hold up the projecting roof.
This exposed structure is the part of the Seimon most worth studying. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database includes 2 exterior photographs, one from the south and one from the southwest.
A High Ridge Built for Effect
At the top, both the main ridge and the descending ridges that run down toward the gable ends are stacked high and finished in the kagemori (影盛) manner. The result gives the ridges depth and shadow, so the gate looks weightier than its modest width would suggest.
The Agency describes this imposing exterior as giving the old family's estate a dignified front. Before the gate, the forecourt climbs from the road up a slope of built-up earth and is paved with cut granite. The Enomoto Family Residence Main Gate stands at the top of that slope.
Why It Was Registered
The Enomoto Family Residence Main Gate was registered under number 12-0332 for its contribution to the historic landscape. In the Agency's classification it counts as an "other structure" rather than a building.
Visiting
The Enomoto Family Residence Main Gate belongs to a private home, and neither the grounds behind it nor the forecourt in front are open to the public. Because the gate is set back from the street and the forecourt is private land, you cannot get close enough to study the beams or the ridge.
Photographs of the gate are available in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database, on Cultural Heritage Online and on Abiko City's page about the residence. If you pass by, please stay off the property and be considerate of the residents and neighbors.
