A Former Inn of Kamagaya-juku on the Kioroshi Road

The Maruya (丸屋) is a former inn of Kamagaya-juku on the Kioroshi road in Kamagaya, Kamagaya City, Chiba Prefecture, whose main building and detached room, both of about 1897, were registered in 2020 as two Registered Tangible Cultural Properties.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records Nono Village Co., Ltd. as owner.

Kamagaya City notes that, with the Shibuya family residence registered the same day, these were the city's first registered cultural properties.

From Inn to Home

According to Kamagaya City, Maruya was an Edo-period inn of Kamagaya-juku on the Kioroshi road. It burned in a fire in 1893 and was rebuilt around 1897.

It had ceased to be an inn by 1902, was remodelled as a home in the late Meiji period, and was converted into apartments in 1956, reaching its present form.

The Main Building and the Detached Room

According to the Agency, the main building is two storeys, five bays by seven, hipped and pantiled, with heavy posts and beams. The lifting shutters at the front entrance and the eaves recall its days as a post-town inn.

The detached room east of the former inn is a single-storey hipped, pantiled building five and a half bays by three, with eight- and ten-mat rooms, each with an alcove and shelves. The Agency describes it as a small but finely finished Meiji reception wing.

Visiting Maruya

Kamagaya City notes that it is a private residence and the grounds cannot be visited.
