656 Boats and Tools from the Tone River
The Riverboats and Related Equipment of the Middle and Lower Tone River Basin (利根川中下流域の川船及び関連用具, Tonegawa Chūkaryūiki no Kawabune oyobi Kanren Yōgu) is a collection of 656 riverboats and associated tools used for transport and daily life along the middle and lower reaches of the Tone River in Chiba Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Folk Cultural Property on 28 March 2025. Chiba Prefecture owns it, and it is divided among three prefectural museums: the Central Museum in Chiba City, its Otone Branch in Katori and the Sekiyado Castle Museum in Noda.
The collection comprises 8 riverboats and 648 related items. It was registered as a collection of folk material that shows historical change, regional character and the workings of a trade. According to the Central Museum, it is the first property registered in the category of objects used for transport, shipping and communication.
Takasebune and Sappa Boats
From the early modern period the Tone was the great waterway linking the northern Kanto plain with Edo (Tokyo) and the port of Choshi. Along its middle and lower course, river landings called kashi sprang up, and boats carried both cargo and people. The Central Museum notes that this river trade fed local industries such as brewing.
Two kinds of boat anchor the collection. The takasebune was the long-haul freighter, counted among the largest riverboats in Japan; the Central Museum says these boats worked the Tone from the Edo period until the Showa 30s (1955–1964). What survives here are parts of their hulls and rigging: rudders, sails and pulleys.
The other is the sappa, a small wooden skiff that people living around the Tone's tributaries and lakes relied on as their everyday transport. The collection also includes agebune, boats kept ready for escape when the river flooded.
Boatwrights' Tools and Boatmen's Faith
The 648 related items fall into four groups: gear used aboard, tools for handling the boats, boatwrights' tools, and objects of worship belonging to the people who lived by the river.
A 2025 topic exhibition at the Central Museum, Takasebune of the Tone River, drew on this collection to show the nails used to join hull planks and the tools for caulking seams with makihada fibre. It also looked at the boatmen's devotion to Anba-sama, a guardian of safe passage, and at the way shared worship bound the boatwrights together.
Big freighters, everyday skiffs and the tools that built and mended them sit together in one collection. The Central Museum describes the Riverboats and Related Equipment of the Middle and Lower Tone River Basin as a rare record of river transport before Japan's high-growth era.
