A Shrine Behind the Halls
Yoshino Sake Brewery Matsuo Shrine is a single-storey timber shrine of the late Meiji era at Ueno in Katsuura City, Chiba Prefecture, entered on the national register as Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 April 2008.
It stands northeast of the north brewing house, 3.9 metres by 2.1 metres with the ridge running north to south, facing south. At 10 square metres it is the smallest of the ten registered items.
Katsuura City describes it as enshrining the deity of brewing. Breweries across Japan keep such a shrine on the premises, and Yoshino Sake Brewery Matsuo Shrine is one of them. The national record adds that it contains an inner shrine, a miniature cabinet-like structure within the building.
Small, but Not Plain
The roof is an irimoya form of sangawara pantiles. The rafters repay attention: the front eaves alone use fan rafters, splaying towards the corners, while the rest are laid parallel. Fan rafters are slow work and were reserved for the face of a building.
That face also carries a koryo, a gently arched beam, and a kaerumata strut above it. Both are pieces of temple and shrine carpentry, and both were fitted here to a building of 10 square metres.
The walls are vertical boarding. Ornament is concentrated where it will be seen and the sides and rear are left plain, a distribution of effort typical of small shrines.
What Is Inside
A raised floor begins 1.3 metres from the rear wall, with an arched beam thrown across it to define the naijin, the inner sanctuary. Of a total depth of 3.9 metres, roughly a third is given over to that raised seat.
A lower space in front for standing, a higher one behind for the deity: shrines of every size share that division. This one achieves it at about the smallest dimensions the arrangement allows.
The listing criterion was contribution to the historic landscape. Counting the shrine alongside the halls and the chimney recognises that a brewery compound of this period held a place of worship within its own walls.
Conditions for Seeing It
Yoshino Sake Brewery Matsuo Shrine stands well inside the compound, northeast of the north brewing house. The interior is closed and no arrangement for worship by visitors is advertised.
