The Wide Frontage on the Village Lane
The Murakami Family Residence Front Gate and South Wall (村上家住宅表門及び南塀) is a mid-Edo-period gate and earthen wall on the island of Ōshima in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture, added to the national list of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 15 August 2024. The gate has a frontage of 3.8 metres in timber under a tiled roof; the wall runs 18 metres in rammed earth, also tiled. The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates both between 1661 and 1751 and notes a remodelling around 1871.
Ōshima lies offshore from Niihama, its single settlement clustered around the harbour. The Murakami family served as shōya, the headman of the island under the Saijō domain, and this gate and wall form the boundary between their plot and the public lane. The gate stands in front of the main house, with the wall reaching out on either side of it.
The roof is Kirizuma-zukuri, a simple gable, entered on the long side in the Hirairi manner, and laid in Sangawara-buki pantiles. Above the kabuki beam that spans the two gateposts, short struts rise to carry the ridge purlin. The load of the roof drops straight onto that beam, with nothing decorative in between.
Why It Was Registered
The Murakami Family Residence Front Gate and South Wall was listed under the criterion for structures contributing to the historic landscape of the country, as register number 38-0188 in the 107th round. That criterion asks less about the artistry of an individual building than about its effect on how a place looks. A gate and wall standing along a public lane have that effect directly.
The main house and the lord's gate with its east wall were registered on the same day. Because the enclosure was listed together with what it encloses, the layout of an Edo-period headman's compound entered the register whole rather than in fragments.
Niihama City records that the family still holds a note of a visit by the lord of the Saijō domain in the Genroku era (1688 to 1704) and a document on repairs carried out in 1762. The gate and wall are part of the setting that received such callers.
Details of an Everyday Gate
Double plank doors hang in the opening, and a small wicket door, a kugurido, is cut into the wall just west of them. A wicket lets one person pass without swinging the main doors, and its presence marks this as the entrance in daily use. The lord's gate a few metres east has no wicket. The difference in function between the two gates is legible in that one small door.
The south wall is earth finished in Shikkui lime plaster under pantiles, but its lower band is rendered in cement mortar. Mortar came into general use only in the modern period, so the base has evidently been repaired at some later date. Follow the line where the white plaster meets the grey render and the repair history reads as a horizontal seam along the whole length.
A frontage of 3.8 metres is generous for the gate of a house rather than a temple. With 18 metres of wall extending on either side, the Murakami Family Residence Front Gate and South Wall gives the compound a street elevation far longer than the building behind it. Walking up the lane, you meet the white of the plaster first and the gate second.
Visiting
This is part of a private home, and passing through the gate is not possible. There are no open days and no bookings. The gate and wall front the public lane, so the exterior can be seen from the road. When photographing, take care to keep the inside of the plot and the residents out of the picture.
Reaching Ōshima means taking the Niihama municipal ferry. Kuroshima Port, where it sails from, is about 2.5 kilometres from Takihama Station on the JR Yosan Line, about 30 minutes on foot. The crossing takes 15 minutes and costs 60 yen one way for adults and 30 yen for children, with 13 sailings each way daily (timetable revised 1 October 2023; checked 5 September 2026). The settlement centre is a 5-minute walk from the pier.
The island has no bus service, so everything is done on foot. The lane in front of the gate is a working village road, and anyone stopping to look should stand clear of it.
