Saijo Eiko Church

Saijo Eiko Church (西条栄光教会) in Akeyashiki, Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture, a church of the United Church of Christ in Japan on the site of the Saijo domain jin'ya, has a chapel and a parsonage of 1951 that were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 26, 2021 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Both are owned by the church.

The Two Buildings

The chapel, 20 by 9 metres under a gabled roof of pantiles, has a bell tower at the centre of the south front and a cross on its projecting gable; inside is a single worship room with the altar at the far end, striking for its white walls and tall windows (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The parsonage, joined to the south of the chapel by a covered passage, is a two-storey house with cedar boarding below and exposed timber framing above, finished inside and out in Japanese style with plaster, lattices and paper screens (Agency for Cultural Affairs). A modern chapel thus stands beside a Japanese-style manse. Each building is described on its own page.
