A Gate One Bay Wide
The Shinonaga Sake Brewery Gate (篠永酒造門, Shinonaga Shuzō Mon) is a timber gate of about 1886 in Gujōchō Masayukimori, Shikokuchuo City, Ehime Prefecture, entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 1 December 2003.
Its opening measures one bay, 1.8 meters across, enough for people and goods and no more. The roof carries Sangawara-buki pantiles, and short wing walls flank it on either side. The gate joins the main house on its south end and faces the street.
Japan's Agency for Cultural Affairs classifies it not as a building but as a structure of another kind. Of the three registered items on this plot, the gate alone falls outside the building category. The owner is Shinonaga Sake Brewery Co., Ltd.
Registered for the Streetscape
The register number is 38-0045, from the thirty-ninth round, and the criterion is the same one applied to the main house: contribution to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency's own description calls the gate plain in construction yet careful in execution, and credits it with adding colour to the street.
Taken alone, a gate of this size and structure would not stand out. What counted was the continuous frontage it forms alongside the house, addressed to a road that pilgrims on the Shikoku circuit still walk. Frontages of this kind rarely survive intact.
The registration system itself is set out under Registered Tangible Cultural Property. It works through notification rather than permission, and the Shinonaga Sake Brewery Gate continues in service as the entrance to a working company.
Cloud-Shaped Tiles and a Matched Wall Line
Start at the two ends of the ridge. A torifusuma tile rises at each, angled upward and cut to a cloud-like profile. The torifusuma is the long tile projecting behind the ridge-end ornament, put there to stop birds perching and fouling the tiles below, and here its outline has been shaped rather than left plain. The same cloud form appears on the ridge of the main house. One detail is enough to show that gate and house were not detailed by separate hands working apart.
Look up under the eaves and you find a single tier of Taruki rafters, spaced apart rather than set close. This is the simplest of the standard treatments, avoiding the doubled or closely ranked rafters used on buildings of higher rank. The choice reads as deliberate, keeping the gate below the house in formality.
Wing walls stand to left and right, and their height was matched to the vertical boarding on the lower wall of the main house. Walking along the road you can follow a horizontal line that runs from the gate's wing wall into the boarded base of the house without a break. The Shinonaga Sake Brewery Gate exists partly to complete that line.
Visiting the Shinonaga Sake Brewery Gate
The gate belongs to Shinonaga Sake Brewery Co., Ltd., which uses it as the company entrance. It is not a visitor facility, so there are no opening hours or admission fees, and you cannot pass through into the grounds. Because it stands on the street, the exterior can be seen head-on from the road.
Photography from the public road is fine. Please do not aim a lens through the opening at the yard beyond, and do not touch or lean on the gate doors while shooting.
The nearest station is Iyo-Mishima on the JR Yosan Line, about two kilometers to the northeast in a straight line. Reckon on roughly thirty minutes walking, or ten minutes by taxi, with the road climbing gently from the town toward the hills. No visitor parking is provided. The lane in front is a narrow residential street, and a car left there obstructs it, so parking in the town centre and walking the last stretch is the practical approach.
