The Katsuyama Station Building
Echizen Railway Katsuyama Station Building (えちぜん鉄道勝山駅本屋, Echizen-tetsudō Katsuyama-eki Hon'ya) is a two-storey wooden station building at Hishima in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, built in 1914 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 17 February 2004. It covers 158 square metres and carries a hipped roof of pantiles.
A canopy on posts runs right round the building, open at the sides. In a district that takes both rain and heavy snow, it lets passengers fold an umbrella before stepping indoors. The single-storey range on the south is a later addition, and its eaves line sits slightly out of step with the main block, which makes the join easy to pick out from the forecourt.
The Echizen Railway Katsuyama Station Building belongs to Katsuyama City and is managed by Echizen Railway. It has stood on the same spot since the line opened in 1914 and still sells tickets and passes travellers through to the platforms.
Why it is registered
The Echizen Railway Katsuyama Station Building was registered under the criterion of being a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database treats it as a well resolved example of a main station building on a rural Japanese railway.
What carries that judgement is the wall. The framing is left visible in the shinkabe manner, and the two floors are finished differently: vertical boarding under paint on the ground floor, white lime plaster above. One building holds a Western treatment below and a Japanese one above. That mixture belongs to the early 1910s, when Western detailing was reaching small country stations, and here it survived.
The plinth is built of Shakudani stone quarried in Fukui City, a soft tuff long used in the Fukui plain for foundations and retaining walls, which keeps the timber wall clear of ground damp. The Fukui Prefectural Tourism Federation also notes the roof frame, which combines the Japanese wagoya method with Western trussing.
What to look for
Stand in front and follow the horizontal line where painted boarding gives way to white plaster. That line explains the Echizen Railway Katsuyama Station Building more quickly than any label. Step under the canopy, look up along a post, and watch the same line disappear into the shadow of the eaves.
Then look down. Shakudani stone is easy to cut and weathers visibly, so the blocks of the plinth show a century of wear in their rounded arrises.
Inside, work in 2013 opened part of the ceiling back to the full height it had when the building went up. With the ceiling gone, the upper wall comes into view and the division seen from outside turns out to continue indoors. Part of the ground floor is used as a cafe, which is where people tend to sit while they wait.
Visiting
The Echizen Railway Katsuyama Station Building is a working station, so the waiting room is open whenever the ticket window is staffed, all year from 5:15 a.m. until 0:15 a.m. the following day. There is no admission charge. The platform side lies beyond the gate, so seeing the building from there needs a ticket.
The cafe inside reopened in May 2024 and serves from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. When it is open you can take your time over the opened-up interior.
Photographs come easiest from the forecourt, where the canopy and the upper floor fit into one frame. On the platform, avoid flash towards approaching trains, leave the tripod behind, and follow staff instructions.
