The Matsuoka Station Building

Echizen Railway Matsuoka Station Building (えちぜん鉄道松岡駅本屋, Echizen-tetsudō Matsuoka-eki Hon'ya) is a single-storey wooden station building at Matsuoka Shinmei in Eiheiji Town, Fukui Prefecture, built around 1933 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 25 July 2011. It is the second building on the site, not the one that opened with the line in 1914.

It covers 84 square metres and measures 14 metres by 3.7 metres. Entered on the gable end, it faces west. The roof is half-hipped and laid with pantiles, a small hipped roof projects over the front door, and the south flank carries the platform canopy. The walls are clapboard.

The station stands in the centre of Matsuoka, and the line through it was laid by the Echizen Electric Railway, the railway arm of the Kyoto Dento company, to join Fukui with Katsuyama. The Echizen Railway Matsuoka Station Building is still staffed, with a clerk at the window.

Why it is registered

The registration criterion is that the building contributes to the historic landscape of the country. What makes the Echizen Railway Matsuoka Station Building worth the listing is how visibly an early Showa station picked up the fashions of its day.

The roof pitch is steep, and a circular window is set high in the gable. Elements from the Western-influenced houses of the period were carried into an otherwise Japanese timber building. Fukui Prefecture names three features as the ones that give the building its character: the steep roof, the round window, and posts made from rail.

The interior counts too. Both the waiting room and the staff room keep much of their original form. Among station buildings still in daily service, that is rare.

What to look for

Come round to the front and look up at the gable. The circular window near the ridge, with the roof rising steeply beneath it, is what lets you pick the Echizen Railway Matsuoka Station Building out from a distance.

Then look at the posts. Some of those carrying the platform canopy and the entrance roof were cut from disused rail, and the profile in section shows railway material being turned straight into building material.

Inside, the waiting room keeps its older fittings. The height of the ticket window, the way the dado boards meet the wall and the distance to the ceiling all differ from what a station is built to today, and a few minutes before a train is enough to notice it.

Visiting

The Echizen Railway Matsuoka Station Building is a staffed station and the waiting room is open to anyone at no charge. The window works all year from 6:25 a.m. to 7:50 p.m. There is no ticket machine, so tickets are bought at the window, and a ticket is needed to step out onto the platform.

Trains on the Katsuyama Eiheiji Line take about 17 minutes from Fukui Station, roughly every 30 minutes during the day. The station has no car park, but there is cycle parking for 40, 5 rental bicycles and a toilet.

For photographs, stand in the forecourt and take the gable end square on, which brings the round window and the porch roof into one frame. On the platform, avoid flash towards moving trains, leave the tripod behind and follow staff instructions.

These times and numbers were checked in September 2026 and do change, so confirm them on the Echizen Railway station page.
