The Shiizakai Station Building
Echizen Railway Shiizakai Station Building (えちぜん鉄道志比堺駅本屋, Echizen-tetsudō Shiizakai-eki Hon'ya) is a single-storey wooden station building at Matsuoka Shiizakai in Eiheiji Town, Fukui Prefecture, built around 1937 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 25 July 2011. The station itself dates from 1914, but the building was put up later, on a new site.
It covers 52 square metres and measures 10 metres by 2.8 metres. Facing north, it carries a gabled roof of sheet metal that is swept down on the track side to form the platform canopy. Next to the tiled station buildings elsewhere on the line, the roof looks light and the silhouette thin.
The valley here is squeezed between the Kuzuryu River and the hills, and the Echizen Railway Shiizakai Station Building stands well above the houses it serves. The railway followed a terrace in the ground, so passengers climbing to the station end up looking down on the roofs of the settlement.
Why it is registered
The registration criterion is that the building contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Echizen Railway Shiizakai Station Building survives as a record of what a railway thought a lightly used intermediate stop deserved.
Almost nothing is decorated. Walls and roof were built cheaply, and the plan encloses only the space needed for waiting and for the ticket barrier. Two places are different: the eaves of the entrance canopy, and the metal brackets under the ticket counter. Fukui Prefecture singles out exactly these two in its description of an otherwise plain building.
A date of about 1937 places it in the later years of Kyoto Dento's ownership of the Echizen Electric Railway. More than twenty years after the line opened, there was still money to move a station and rebuild it, and this one structure is the evidence.
What to look for
Look up under the entrance canopy. It is nearly the only place in the Echizen Railway Shiizakai Station Building where anyone shaped a line for its own sake, and the junction between the eaves and the timber supporting it shows where the builders drew the border between plain and decorated.
The metal brackets carrying the ticket counter are still in place. Small fittings like these are usually replaced, and few station buildings keep the originals.
Step out to the platform side. The track curves gently away and the hillside comes close. Because the station sits high, the valley shows over the village roofs from the waiting room door, and in the long gaps between trains that view is the only thing happening.
Visiting
The Echizen Railway Shiizakai Station Building serves an unstaffed station, and the waiting area is open to anyone. Nothing is charged and there is no reception to pass. A toilet is provided and there is cycle parking for 5. No car park is attached to the station.
Trains on the Katsuyama Eiheiji Line take about 19 minutes from Fukui Station, roughly every 30 minutes during the day. A few services pass through without stopping, so check the timetable before boarding. Since the station is unstaffed, fares are settled on the train.
The whole building fits into one frame from the approach road. Going out to the platform needs a ticket; avoid flash towards moving trains and leave tripods behind. The waiting area belongs to people catching trains, so keep your bags out of the way.
These conditions were checked in September 2026. Services and facilities change, so confirm them on the Echizen Railway station page.
