The Storehouse

The Former Negishi Family Residence Storehouse (旧根岸家住宅土蔵) is a 2-storey storehouse of the early Showa period (1926 to 1945) in Iwamoto-cho, Echizen City, Fukui Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on January 26, 2011 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a 2-storey Dozo-zukuri building with a tiled roof and a building area of 90 square metres; registration number 18-0088.

The storehouse stands behind the main house on the east edge of the plot, with its ridge running north to south (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Of the three buildings, it is the one furthest from the street.

How the Storehouse Is Built

It is a 2-storey building 12 metres long and 5.9 metres deep, under a gable roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) of pantiles (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Each face is finished differently. The west side carries a Hisashi pent roof along its whole length, with a mortar dado and Shikkui lime plaster above; the other sides are clad high up in Shitami-itabari horizontal boarding (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Inside, both floors are divided into two rooms, north and south, and the walls are built in the Shinkabe manner, leaving posts and tie beams exposed (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a large 2-storey storehouse.

With the gate and main house also registered, the full sequence from street to gate, house and storehouse survives as one property, and the Former Negishi Family Residence Storehouse closes it at the back.

What to Look For

The west face looks toward the main house, with plaster walls and a mortar base running beneath the pent roof. The other three sides are sheathed in boards, so the building changes character as you move around it.

The exposed posts and beams inside, and the split into two rooms on each floor, show how the space was used. Its size also hints at how much the household had to store.

Visiting
