About the Sakai Family Residence Storehouse

The Sakai Family Residence Storehouse (坂井家住宅土蔵, Sakai-ke Jūtaku Dozō) is an earthen-walled Dozo-zukuri storehouse of the early Meiji era in Kitahonmachi, Mikuni-cho, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2005.

The Sakai Family Residence Storehouse stands behind the main house across a courtyard. It is mostly single-storey with a partial upper floor, measures 3 by 2.5 ken (a ken is about 1.8 m) and has a building area of 35 m². The cargo storehouse adjoins it on the south.

A Solid Link in the Property

The Storehouse was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it solidly built and an indispensable part of the property.

It sits between the main house on the street and the cargo storehouse on the river, at the hinge of the plot. The passage that continues from the main house's earthen corridor runs along its side, so this storehouse lies right on the route through the property.

Tall, Sealed Walls

The roof is gabled (Kirizuma-zukuri) and covered in Sangawara-buki pantiles. On the east side a lean-to Geya roof sweeps down to shelter the passage from the main house, and the door opens onto that passage.

The walls rise high and, apart from a small window on the north side, are entirely sealed in plaster. Openings are kept to a minimum, which is what the Agency means by solid construction.

The building is not large, but its height and closed walls give the middle of the plot a sense of weight.

Seeing the Sakai Family Residence Storehouse

The Storehouse belongs to a private home and we found no information on public access (checked October 2026). It lies behind the main house beyond a courtyard and is hard to see from the street.

Please stay off the property. Access and the layout of the whole property are on the Sakai Family Residence (Mikuni) page.
