A Wide Bracket Gate on the Old Road
The Yasumoto Sake Brewery Front Gate (安本酒造表門, Yasumoto Shuzō Omotemon) is a wooden gate of the early Showa period at Yasumoto Sake Brewery in Yasuhara-cho, Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 26, 2015. It is a tiled Udekimon, or bracket-arm gate, 3.8 meters wide, with a short Sodobei wing wall on each side.
It stands east of the store and main house, facing the old road. Where the Meiji house is the way into the shop and home, the Yasumoto Sake Brewery Front Gate is the way into the working brewery; step through it and the chimney and brewing storehouse 1 are straight ahead.
Carved Brackets and Paired Rafters
The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that the Yasumoto Sake Brewery Front Gate is unusually wide, about 3.8 meters. An udekimon is a plain type of gate whose eaves rest on Udeki, bracket arms projecting from the posts. Here, though, the upper arm is carried out on a lower supporting arm with a moulded profile, and the eaves project about 90 centimeters, deeper than usual. The curve cut into the end of that lower arm is what to look for in the gate's side view.
The rafters at the eaves are set in pairs, a pattern called fukiyose-daruki, and the board that caps their ends is carved with a diamond-lattice ground pattern. This is detail that only shows when you look up, and the Agency describes the gate as elaborately designed.
Why It Was Registered
The Yasumoto Sake Brewery Front Gate is registered as number 18-0132, for its contribution to the historic landscape.
The brewery's frontage on the old road runs from the rice storehouse in the west past the store and main house, and it ends at this gate. With its deep eaves and wing walls on either side, the gate gives that row of buildings a clear eastern edge.
Seeing the Front Gate
The Yasumoto Sake Brewery Front Gate faces the old road, so its front can be seen from the street. Stand in front of it and look up under the eaves to see the moulded brackets, the paired rafters and the carved diamond pattern.
Behind the gate is the working brewery, and tours are not offered. Do not pass through; view the gate from a spot where you are not blocking traffic.
