What is the Yuasa Family Residence Treasure Storehouse?
The Yuasa Family Residence Treasure Storehouse (湯浅家住宅宝蔵, Yuasa-ke Jūtaku Hōzō) is a storehouse for household goods built in 1881 west of the new reception wing at the Yuasa Family Residence in Miyazaki, Takahama-cho, Oi District, Fukui Prefecture, and it was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (Registered Tangible Cultural Property) on March 13, 2025. It is a 2-story Dozo-zukuri building with a tiled roof and 52 square meters of building area, and it was moved in 1933.
Its registration number is 18-0259, and it was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that the Yuasa Family Residence Treasure Storehouse forms a continuous scene with the new reception wing in the northwest of the site. The wing was also built in 1933, so the storehouse was moved in the same year as that building work.
A covered loading space and a raised entrance roof
The Yuasa Family Residence Treasure Storehouse has a gabled roof (Kirizuma-zukuri) with its entrance on the long side (Hirairi), laid with pan tiles (Sangawara-buki). The walls are finished in lime plaster (Shikkui), and a window opens in the upper floor on the front.
The door is in the middle of the south face. A pent roof (Geya) in front of it creates a Kuramae, the sheltered space before a storehouse door, and toward the east the roof is cut up and raised to form an entrance porch. The front of the storehouse thus pairs a space for moving goods in and out with a doorway for people.
Sloping and level beams under one roof
Inside, both floors of the Yuasa Family Residence Treasure Storehouse have board floors. The roof framing combines Nobori-bari, beams laid on the slope of the roof, with beams laid level.
The rice storehouse next door to the west supports its ridge in a different way, with a ridge beam carried on posts set on a heavy log laid over double tie beams. The two storehouses stand side by side, yet their roofs are framed on different principles.
