Maruoka Castle's keep is Japan's only surviving keep roofed in stone, with Shakudani tuff slabs weighing up to 120 tonnes. Recent dating places it around 1628.
Mikuni's 511-metre stone breakwater, designed by Dutch engineer G. A. Escher and founded on woven brushwood, was the first such work in Japan. Completed 1882.
