The heart of the house
The Former Kurauchi Family Residence Main House (旧蔵内家住宅主屋, Kyū-Kurauchi-ke Jūtaku Shuoku) in Kamifukano, Chikujo-machi, Fukuoka Prefecture, is the two-storey core of a coal-mining family's home, dated to 1887 in the national record and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on February 14, 2002.
It faces east under a big Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles, its ridge running north to south. The plan measures 8 and a half by 4 bays and covers 256 square metres, and unlike most country houses of its day the upper floor is built out to the full footprint of the lower one. Of the 12 registered buildings on the estate, none stands taller.
On the west side a lower roof shelters the rooms the family actually lived in, a sitting room among them. Guests were received toward the garden in the east; daily life was tucked behind. When the Kurauchi later expanded, every major addition, from the Reception Wing to the Kitchen Wing, was plugged into this building.
Why it was registered, and the question of its date
The Main House was registered as number 40-0021 under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs singles out its grandeur as fitting for the center of a great residence.
Its date is not settled. The Agency's database states that a completion photograph fixes construction at 1887. Chikujo Town, which runs the house, says the Main House, the Reception Wing and the garden were laid out around 1906. The gap matters: Kurauchi Jirosaku began digging coal at Tagawa only in 1885, so the earlier date puts the house before the family's fortune, the later one after it. This page records both rather than choosing between them.
On either reading the Main House belongs to the oldest layer of the estate. The great enlargement that followed between 1916 and 1921 radiated outward from it.
What to look for
Stand in the eastern forecourt to take in the mass of the roof. The single-storey Grand Entrance Wing and Reception Wing sit low in front, so the two-storey Main House rises clearly behind them. Walk round to the south and you can see the full height of its gable end, two storeys of wall capped by the layered roof.
Inside, notice how the Main House works as a junction. The Reception Wing joins at its northeast corner, the Zashiki Wing at the northwest, the Kitchen Wing on the southern part of the west side, and a covered corridor once linked it to the Rice Storehouse to the south. Following the visitor route you cross the Main House several times, passing between the formal wings and the service wing.
Town curators describe a coffered ceiling of Yakushima cedar and black persimmon laid in a checkerboard, and a Buddhist altar room papered with kinkarakawa, embossed paper imitating gilded leather. Published sources do not say which building each of these rooms belongs to, so ask the guides on site.
Visiting the Main House
The Former Kurauchi Family Residence Main House is on the regular tour route of Kyu-Kurauchi-tei, and your admission ticket covers the interior. Whether the upper floor is open is not stated in the town's materials and may vary, so check at the desk.
