Munakata Shrine Hetsumiya Worship Hall
The Munakata Shrine Hetsumiya Worship Hall (宗像神社辺津宮拝殿, Hetsumiya haiden) in Tajima, Munakata City, Fukuoka Prefecture, is the hall of worship at Munakata Taisha's mainland shrine, rebuilt in 1590 and designated an Important Cultural Property in 1907.
It is the first building you face after passing through the shrine gate, with the main hall standing behind it (Japan Tourism Agency). Visitors to Hetsumiya make their prayers in front of this hall.

According to Fukuoka Prefecture, the hall was rebuilt by Kobayakawa Takakage, the warlord who governed Chikuzen Province for a time. The chief priest Munakata Ujisada, who had rebuilt the main hall, died in 1586; the worship hall belongs to the years after, when a daimyo serving the Toyotomi regime held the province.
Why It Is Protected
The Munakata Shrine Hetsumiya Worship Hall was designated an Important Cultural Property on May 27, 1907, the same day as the main hall, together with one Munafuda ridge tag (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
A sanctuary raised by a local priest-lord and a worship hall raised by an incoming daimyo stand one behind the other, 12 years apart. Together they record the moment when power over Munakata changed hands, which is a large part of why the pair matters.
What to Look For
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey hall 6 bays long, its width divided into 1 bay at the front and 3 at the back, under a gabled roof of kokera shingles. It is entered at the gable end, so the triangle of the gable faces you as you approach.
The Munakata Digital Museum describes the hall as projecting straight forward from the front of the main hall, plain and dignified, with little ornament. Set against the carved eaves of the main hall, its quiet lines seem almost designed to lead the eye on to the roof behind.
The odd bay count is worth a moment. The record suggests a front left open as a single wide bay, with columns dividing the back into three, and that is likely what gives the facade its open feel when you stand before it.
Visiting
Anyone may pray in front of the Munakata Shrine Hetsumiya Worship Hall, and its exterior can be seen at close range from inside the gate. The shrine gives no guidance on entering the hall or on photography; requests for formal prayers are handled at the Kiganden prayer hall outside the gate (Munakata Taisha).
To see both the gable front and the long flank running back toward the sanctuary, look at the facade from just inside the gate, then walk round to the right of the main hall, where the roof of the sanctuary rises over the side of the worship hall.
