Ryotei Sato Villa

The Ryotei Sato villa in Ogori, Fukuoka Prefecture, stands on a plot along an old highway: an entrance wing and a hall wing of 1925 and a gate of the late Meiji period. All three were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on June 24, 2021 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency notes that all three contribute to the historic landscape.

The Three Structures

The entrance wing faces south onto the highway: a single-storey timber building under a hip-and-gable roof, with an L-shaped plan and a Western-style room projecting north-west, decorated with unusual reliefs of tigers, lions and mermaids (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The hall wing joins the back of the entrance wing to the east, with an 8-mat and a 15-mat room set in echelon. Fewer posts on the garden side and glazed transom screens all round tie the rooms closely to the garden (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The gate is a front gate under a gabled pantile roof, built in the late Meiji period and moved here in 1927. Its posts and crossbeam are massive and its ridge high (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each is now a Registered Tangible Cultural Property and is covered on its own page.

Getting There

No official information on the restaurant's business or on visiting was found. The gate faces the highway.
