The Ueno Building Warehouse Building

The Ueno Building (Former Mitsubishi Goshi Kaisha Wakamatsu Branch) Warehouse Building (上野ビル(旧三菱合資会社若松支店)倉庫棟, Ueno Biru Sōkotō) is a two-storey brick warehouse in Honmachi, Wakamatsu-ku, Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture; built in 1913, it was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on March 29, 2013. It went up in the same year as the Main Building to serve the Wakamatsu branch of Mitsubishi Goshi Kaisha.

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the Ueno Building Warehouse Building stands west of the Main Building and faces east. It covers 190 square meters, is L-shaped in plan and has a tiled Kirizuma-zukuri gable roof. On the east gable, which projects toward the Main Building, hangs the Mitsubishi emblem, still the plainest marker on the site of the company that built it.

Why the Ueno Building Warehouse Building Was Registered

The Ueno Building Warehouse Building is registration number 40-0082 and, like the Main Building, was registered as a model of design. The national description points to stone used at the base and around the windows, calling the building plain but soundly made, and evidence of the technical standard of brick warehouses of its day.

A plain storehouse earns its place partly because it completes the picture: alongside the office block, it shows what a coal company's branch needed on the ground. Kitakyushu City describes the Main Building, the warehouse and the Former Analysis Room as a group held together by the wall and gate posts, and the Ueno Building Warehouse Building forms the west side of that group.

What to Look For at the Ueno Building Warehouse Building

The eye goes first to the Mitsubishi emblem on the east gable of the Ueno Building Warehouse Building: three diamonds set into the brick, still announcing the company that owned the site before Ueno Kaiun took it over in 1969.

Look too at the base of the walls and the window surrounds. As the national description notes, these are stone rather than brick, strengthening the parts of a working warehouse most likely to be knocked by goods going in and out. In an otherwise unornamented building, they are the main details to notice.

The official Ueno Building website lets a two-storey warehouse with the Mitsubishi mark, apparently part of this building. It describes high ceilings on both floors and a column added on the ground floor to reinforce the floor above. Only electricity is connected, and the space has been used for document storage and food events.

Seeing the Ueno Building Warehouse Building

The Ueno Building Warehouse Building is let as storage space and is not open inside. The only chances to enter are a viewing arranged with Ueno Kaiun by a prospective tenant, or an event held in the warehouse.

From outside, you look at the east gable from the area west of the Main Building. The owners publish nothing about walking through the grounds, so check with Ueno Kaiun before going in, or keep to what can be seen from beyond the gates. The official website allows personal, hobby photography without permission (as of October 2026). Directions are on the Ueno Building group page.
