What Is the Yoshimura Family Residence Former Barn?
The Yoshimura Family Residence Former Barn (吉村家住宅旧納屋, Yoshimura-ke Jūtaku Kyū-naya) is a single-storey wooden outbuilding from the mid-Meiji period (1883 to 1897) in the southwest corner of the Yoshimura family's grounds in Tani 2-chome, Chuo Ward, Fukuoka, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 4 February 2021. It is the oldest of the four registered buildings on the site.
It covers 30 square meters under a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri roof of Sangawara-buki pantiles. The walls are built in the Shinkabe manner, with the posts left visible, and clad in vertical boards (Tateita-bari). The Agency for Cultural Affairs records alterations around 1945 and again around 1950.
A Link to the Earlier House
Family tradition holds that the Yoshimura Family Residence Former Barn served an earlier main house said to have been built in the Bunsei era (1818 to 1830). According to Fukuoka City, that older house was taken down in 2007. The present main house was built separately in 1925 as a retirement residence, so the barn is the only building left from the homestead as it stood before then.
The barn itself is dated to the mid-Meiji period from the weathering of its timbers. The Bunsei date belongs to the lost main house, not to the barn, and the two should not be confused.
From Storage to Living Rooms
Both the city and the Agency for Cultural Affairs suggest that the Yoshimura Family Residence Former Barn was used to store rice paid in by tenant farmers. If so, it hints that the Yoshimura family held farmland in the modern era even while living in a samurai district, though the use remains a conjecture.
After the war the interior was refitted as two tatami rooms, 6 mats on the north side and 4.5 mats on the south. A storage building became part of the household's living space, and the alteration dates in the record trace that change.
From outside it is a plain building, the vertical lines of boards and posts under a single gabled roof. Set against the layered roofs of the main house, its simplicity is easy to read.
Visiting the Yoshimura Family Residence Former Barn
The Yoshimura Family Residence Former Barn stands within a private home, and no public openings were announced as of October 2026. The grounds cannot be entered and there is no official guidance on photography. Its position in the southwest corner may put it near the street, but how much of it can be seen from outside has not been confirmed.
