What the Hosoi Family Residence Gate Is
The Hosoi Family Residence Gate (細井家住宅門, Hosoi-ke Jūtaku Mon) is a timber Munamon gate built in 1861 in Shizukawa, Minamiaizu Town, Fukushima Prefecture, and was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 21 April 1998 under registration number 07-0020. It is the entrance to the estate of the Hosoi, a family of village headmen, and it faces the road.
It is built of timber with a metal-sheet roof. The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the same period as the main house, and its date field gives the same year, 1861.
A munamon is a gate whose gabled roof rests directly on two main posts, with no rear support posts. It looks plain, but a roofed gate of any kind announced the standing of the house behind it. Of the four Hosoi buildings still listed, this is the only one that faces the road.
Why It Was Listed
The Hosoi Family Residence Gate was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency praises it on two counts: it expresses the status of a family that served as village headmen, and it is a valuable component of a large farmhouse compound.
A gate is the most public part of an estate. The house and storehouses may stand well back, but passers-by see the gate, and a headman's rank was shown there. The value of this gate lies less in its size than in the way it presents the household to the road.
The Agency's commentary also mentions the small stone bridge attached to the gate, spanning the gap between the road and the entrance. An old estate drawing shows the bridge was there before 1861, so the entrance stood in this spot even before the present gate was built.
What to Look For
Look at the gate and the stone bridge together. Crossing the bridge from the road and passing under the gate is an approach that goes back at least to the drawing made before 1861. Beside a modern road, the way into an Edo-period estate survives intact.
Notice the form of the munamon, too. With just two posts carrying the roof, it is lighter than gates with rear posts such as the yakuimon or kōraimon, and the line of the roof reads clearly against the sky.
When it was registered, the gate was described as standing just west of the post office building. That building was removed from the register on 10 February 2026 under the category of demolition or similar alteration, so the scene to the east of the gate may no longer match the original description.
Visiting
The Hosoi Family Residence Gate is the entrance to a private estate. No opening days or visitor arrangements appear in material published by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Fukushima Prefecture or Minamiaizu Town (checked 1 October 2026).
Because it faces the road, the exterior can be seen from the roadside. Do not cross the bridge or pass through the gate onto the property. No signs about photography were found, but the house behind is lived in, so keep windows and residents out of your pictures, and avoid lingering on the road shoulder.
Minamiaizu gets heavy snow, and in winter roadside snowbanks hide much of the gate and bridge. Come in the snow-free months to see how the two fit together. Directions to the estate are on the Hosoi Family Residence page.
