About the Former Hayashi Clinic
The Former Hayashi Clinic (旧林療院, Hayashi Ryoin) is a doctor's practice built in 1904 in Shimadani, Hachiman-cho, Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture, whose main building was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on September 2, 1998, followed by the nurses' building and X-ray building on October 9 the same year. It now serves as the Gujo Hachiman Rakugeikan, a city museum (Gujo City).
According to Gujo City, the museum opened in 2000 to preserve and use the Meiji- and Taisho-era clinic. It displays the consulting room and early X-ray equipment actually used here, along with everyday objects donated by residents and artworks by local people or on Gujo themes.
Three Buildings
The main building of 1904 is a Western-style clinic in the pseudo-Western manner, with Ionic columns at its entrance porch. The nurses' building, attached to its left, is said to reuse timber from late-Edo foot-soldiers' row houses. The X-ray building is a small Western-style structure of the early Taisho period behind the main building (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Gujo City).
All three were registered as buildings that contribute to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the nurses' building as an essential part of understanding the history of a provincial clinic.
Visiting the Former Hayashi Clinic
The Gujo Hachiman Rakugeikan is open 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Closing days vary by season: Monday to Wednesday from April to June and September to November, Mondays in July and August, Monday to Thursday in December and March, Monday to Friday in January and February, and December 27 to January 4. Admission is 220 yen for adults (high school and above), 150 yen each for groups of 20 or more, and free for junior high pupils and younger (Gujo City).
