About the Former Hayashi Clinic X-Ray Building
The Former Hayashi Clinic X-Ray Building (旧林療院レントゲン棟) is a small two-storey Western-style building of the early Taisho period behind the main building of the former Hayashi Clinic in Shimadani, Hachiman-cho, Gujo City, Gifu Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on October 9, 1998. It is said to have housed the earliest X-ray facility in Gifu Prefecture (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a two-storey wooden building with a sheet-iron roof and a building area of 22 square metres; registration number 21-0016, owned by Gujo City. The Hayashi Clinic was a doctor's practice built in 1904 and is now open as the Gujo Hachiman Rakugeikan museum (Gujo City).
Why It Was Registered
The Former Hayashi Clinic X-Ray Building was registered as a building that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs values it as a rare survivor showing that up-to-date medicine was being practised in a provincial town.
What to Look For
The Former Hayashi Clinic X-Ray Building is a small two-storey building behind the main block. Its ground floor is built like an earthen storehouse, but the whole is designed to echo the main building (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Compare the two to see the main building's Western dress carried over to this small rear block.
Gujo City notes that the X-ray building was in use in the Taisho era, and the museum displays early X-ray equipment.
