Kaba Sake Brewery

The Kaba Sake Brewery (蒲酒造場) occupies a plot facing south onto Ichinomachi-dori in Furukawacho Ichinomachi, Hida City, Gifu Prefecture, with the Setogawa canal along its north side; its main house, side storehouse, archive storehouse and 2 brewing storehouses, built in 1906 after the great fire of 1904, were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on July 31, 2007 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Five Buildings on the Street and the Canal

The main house, rebuilt with the main house of the Wada family from nearby, is a townhouse 11 bays wide whose long front of lattices and large doors is the core of the streetscape (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The side storehouse at the south-east corner is loved with it as a symbol of the street, while the archive storehouse and brewing storehouse No. 1 line the canal with white walls. Brewing storehouse No. 2 at the north-west corner was once the store of a ryotei and has a Western-style ceiling ornament.

The Gifu Prefecture Tourism Federation describes it as a brewer that has made local sake for more than 300 years. Each building is described on its own page.

Visiting

The owner is not listed in the Agency record. According to the Gifu Prefecture Tourism Federation, tours must be booked a week ahead and are not offered from October to December, costing 500 yen per person for up to 10 people, with guidance in Japanese only.
