Hida Kokubunji's Muromachi Main Hall
The Kokubunji Temple Main Hall (国分寺本堂) is the mid-Muromachi main hall of Hida Kokubunji in Sowa-machi, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on April 5, 1909. A full dismantling repair in 1954 showed that its style and techniques date from the mid-Muromachi period or earlier (Takayama City).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as five bays by four, single-storey, with a hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) roof, a one-bay porch and copper sheeting. Takayama City and the temple give its size as 12.4 metres by 8.66 metres, with a 3.33-metre porch and a veranda on all four sides. The address is 1-83 Sowa-machi; the owner is Kokubunji.
What the 1954 Repair Revealed
Hida Kokubunji is said to have had a large precinct in the Nara period, with a seven-storey pagoda, a main golden hall and a guardian gate. A record notes that the temple burned in the eighth month of 819, after which nothing is recorded until the early modern period (Takayama City, temple). Takayama City attributes the record to the Nihon Isshi, the temple to the Ruiju Kokushi.
The 1954 dismantling showed that the hall's style and methods are mid-Muromachi or earlier, while the front porch and east side are Momoyama-period repairs, probably from the major restoration carried out when the Kanamori lords supported the temple's revival. Foundation stones of a building 4 bays north-south by 7 east-west, thought to be the golden hall, were found 45 centimetres below ground (Takayama City).

Visiting the Kokubunji Main Hall
Hida Kokubunji admits visitors to the main hall, including the interior and the Buddhist images of the inner sanctuary. Reception is from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., closed December 31 and January 1.
