A Fire Lookout on a Shrine Roof

The Yamazakura Shrine Fire Watchtower (山桜神社火の見櫓) is a wooden fire lookout at Yamazakura Shrine in Honmachi 2-chome, Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, moved to its present site in 1932 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on July 31, 2007. Unusually, it is built on top of a building on the south side of the shrine (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as wooden, 7.0 metres high, with an attached single-storey wooden shrine building; registration number 21-0121, owned by Yamazakura Shrine. Takayama City says the tower is believed to date from the Meiji era and was moved here in 1932.

Why It Was Registered

The Yamazakura Shrine Fire Watchtower was registered as a structure that contributes to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that it is a familiar landmark, loved together with the shrine's ema votive-picture market.

On July 27, 2015, Takayama City named it a Landscape Important Building (No. 7), describing it as a symbol of the shopping street that helps shape a fine townscape.

What to Look For

The Yamazakura Shrine Fire Watchtower stands near the intersection at the west end of Yanagibashi Bridge over the Miya River. Posts rise from the roof beams of the building on the south side of the shrine, and the tower is built on its ridge (Agency for Cultural Affairs), so it springs from a rooftop rather than from the ground like most fire lookouts.

The base of the tower is 3.4 metres square, and it rises about 7 metres in three stages to a pyramid-roofed (Hōgyō-zukuri) lookout hut from which hangs an alarm bell made in 1881 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Look up from the street to find the hut and the bell.
