About the Senzairo Seihokaku
The Senzairo Seihokaku (千歳楼栖鳳閣) is an early Showa single-storey wooden guest wing linked by a corridor to the north of the Ryuhokaku at the Senzairo inn in Yoro Town, Gifu Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on October 7, 2014. The ceiling of its side room is papered with a silk painting attributed to Takeuchi Seiho (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey wooden building with a tiled roof and a building area of 196 square metres; registration number 21-0235, owned by Yoro Co., Ltd. Senzairo is an inn at the northern edge of Yoro Park against the hillside, and its main building, Ryuhokaku and Seihokaku were all registered on October 7, 2014 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
Why It Was Registered
The Senzairo Seihokaku was registered as a building that has become a model of design. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points to the generous use of glazed shoji and other means to bring daylight into the rooms.
What to Look For
The Senzairo Seihokaku is built out on stilts on its east side to give the rooms a view. It centres on a 10-mat side room and two 8-mat rooms surrounded by a veranda (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The ceiling of the side room is papered with a silk painting attributed to Takeuchi Seiho (Agency for Cultural Affairs), one of the painters the inn lists among its visitors (Senzairo). Look up at the ceiling and notice the light coming through the glazed screens.
