What a funazoko-tenjō is

A funazoko-tenjō is a ceiling that rises along its centre line and slopes down to either side, so that in section it resembles the inside of an upturned boat. The JAANUS dictionary describes the ceiling boards as running parallel to the ridge and curving down from the peak towards the beams at each side, and gives yakata-tenjō as another name.

JAANUS gives the oldest surviving example as the main hall of Sanzen-in in Kyoto, from 1148, where the boat-shaped ceiling covers only the central space above the Amida triad and is painted with heavenly beings. In Buddhist halls it served to lift the space above the principal image.

In modern houses it appears mostly in tea rooms and sukiya-style rooms. The Saihoan tea house of the former Fujimori residence in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, from 1930, has a boat-shaped ceiling of bamboo blinds over the whole tea room, and the third room of the Ikinariya restaurant in Niigata, from 1877, combines a sloping kakekomi ceiling with a boat-shaped one.

What to look for

Stand in the middle of the room and look up. If the ceiling rises to a single line along the length of the room and slopes away on both sides, it is a funazoko-tenjō, quite different in section from a flat batten ceiling or a coffered ceiling.

An exposed roof underside (kesho-yaneura) beneath a gabled roof can look similar, and JAANUS warns that it is never called a funazoko ceiling. Check whether finished ceiling boards are fixed or the rafters and roof boards are visible.

Records note it as a feature of a room. Follow the record rather than inferring the ceiling form from photographs.
