What half-timbering means
Half-timbering is a European method of timber construction, and the appearance that goes with it, in which the posts, beams and braces of the frame show on the outer wall and the panels between are filled with plaster or brick. The contrast of dark timbers against pale panels is its hallmark, familiar from the old towns of England and Germany.
In Japan it was adopted as a Western design motif from the late Meiji into the early Showa period. Most Japanese examples, however, are not structural half-timbering but decorative boards applied to the wall surface to suggest a frame. Records often describe them as half-timbered in style, and the treatment is commonly confined to a gable or one part of a building.
Showing the posts on the wall face is shared with the Japanese Shinkabe wall. Shinkabe sets the wall between posts and normally does not show diagonal braces, whereas half-timbering deliberately displays braces and closely spaced timbers as a pattern.
Reading the records and the building
Records identify where the treatment is used. The main building of the Awashima Maritime Memorial Hall, formerly the Awashima Seamen's School, in Mitoyo, Kagawa, a two-storey timber building of 1920, is noted for its weatherboarded walls and the half-timbered gable at the centre of its front. The Count Goto Memorial Hall in Oshu, Iwate, decorates the gable wall of its main block in half-timbered style. The Unzen Kanko Hotel in Nagasaki combines lava-stone facing on the ground floor, a log-cabin style on the second and a half-timbered style on the third.
At the Handa Red Brick Building in Aichi, one structure carries the name half-timber building. Even where the word appears in a name, the structure line of the record should be checked to see whether the half-timbering is structural or a matter of appearance.
On site, check whether the lines of timber on the wall match the positions of posts and beams. Diagonals running regardless of windows and doors, with timbers set into the thickness of the wall, indicate a real frame; thin boards applied to the surface indicate decorative half-timbering.
