What a hanegi is
A hanegi is a lever beam concealed in the roof space, weighted at the ridge end by the roof itself and lifting the eaves at the other. Nothing of it shows from outside.
Its point is that deep eaves become possible without Kumimono. Stepping brackets outward as in Mitesaki costs labour and shows on the face of the building; a lever beam does the work out of sight, so the eaves can project without altering the design beneath them.
The three-storey pagoda at Honzanji in Okayama Prefecture, built in 1652, is recorded as an Important Cultural Property rebuilt by the lords of Tsuyama, and is described as following orthodox older method outside while its interior shows newer technique in supporting the eaves on lever beams and in how the bracket arms are joined, making it an early pagoda to adopt early modern structural method.
Old outside and new within is the characteristic pattern. What can be seen keeps to tradition while the hidden roof space takes the new construction.
In modern buildings
It also answers sagging. The former Kishi Residence in Hyogo Prefecture, built in 1918, is described as traditional outside, with barred windows in its Tsushi-nikai, but modern within, its plan close to the Naka-roka type and lever beams and iron rods used to stop the eaves and door heads from dropping, with fine timber used throughout.
The same contrast appears, and here the beam is named beside an iron rod: old and new materials serving one purpose.
Door heads sag when openings grow wide, so the modern preference for fewer columns and larger openings goes together with reinforcement of this kind.
It is hard to verify on site. Concealed in the roof space, it cannot be seen where a ceiling is fitted, and it comes to light during Kaitai shūri or a survey of the roof void. The record is what one has to rely on.
