What magaibutsu means
Magaibutsu are Buddhist images carved directly into a natural cliff or exposed bedrock. Unlike stone images quarried and set up elsewhere, they remain part of the rock. Many are cut within shallow niches, and the carving ranges from low relief barely raised from the surface to high relief approaching sculpture in the round.
In Japan they are especially numerous in the Bungo region of Oita Prefecture, where fine works of the late Heian period are concentrated. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the Usuki group in Oita as the largest and finest of the Heian cliff carvings concentrated in Bungo, cut into exposed welded tuff on a hillside, with 59 figures carved in high relief within relatively shallow niches. Soft tuff is easy to carve but weathers readily, and many figures have suffered collapse or damage.
Reading the records and the site
Cliff carvings may be designated as sculpture, as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties, or as historic sites. At Usuki, 59 figures are a National Treasure as sculpture, and the carvings with nearby stone monuments are also a Special Historic Site. The sculpture commentary dates most of the group to the late Heian period with some Kamakura additions, and notes that heads such as that of the Dainichi at Furuzono were carved fully free of the rock, with parts of the lower bodies made up in separate stone where the rock was insufficient. The east stone Buddhas of Ogata Miyasako in Bungo-Ono, Oita, thought to be late Heian, are designated a historic site.
Articles should confirm from the record the type of designation, sculpture or historic site, and its scope, such as the number of figures and any supplementary monuments. On site, check whether the figures are carved as one with the cliff and note the depth of the niches and the thickness of the relief.
