What a roban is
A roban is the square base set at the apex of a Hōgyō-zukuri roof or a pagoda. It closes the point where the slopes converge and carries the finial above it.
The stupa at Ikegami Honmonji in Tokyo, built in 1828, is recorded as an Important Cultural Property whose detailed description states that it is a timber stupa circular in plan at both levels, with a pyramidal roof of copper sheet carrying this base and a finial mast above, raised by the subscription of the faithful for the 550th memorial of the sect's founder, and that among timber stupas with an internal space, few of which survive nationally, it is the largest.
The finial mast is the metal shaft at the top of a pagoda, made up of rings and flame ornaments. This base is what it stands on.
A pyramidal roof has no horizontal ridge, and its slopes meet at a single point. Left bare that point would be hard to keep watertight, so a base is set there to close it.
Where to look, and how records treat it
Look up at a pyramidal roof from a distance. A square block at the apex with a sphere or a slender shaft above it identifies the base beneath.
Pagodas usually carry the mast and halls a sphere. What sits on top varies with the scale and standing of the roof.
The word appears rarely in the records. The structure field states roof form and covering; how the apex is finished belongs to the longer descriptions, so those are worth checking when researching the term.
The sphere set here is not the same as a Giboshi, which tops the newel posts of a Kōran or a bridge and differs from it in both position and size.
