What Ryukyu limestone is

Ryukyu limestone is the limestone that underlies much of the Ryukyu Islands, formed from coral reefs of the Pleistocene epoch. The official description of the travertine terraces at Hora on Miyako Island, a Natural Monument, sets out the island's geology: a base of sand and mud known as the Shimajiri Group, unconformably overlain by roughly 10 to 50 m of Ryukyu limestone.

The rock dissolves in rainwater and is full of voids, so water passes through it readily. On Miyako, rain soaking into the limestone runs along the top of the Shimajiri Group and emerges as springs at the cliff foot, where the calcium carbonate it carries builds the travertine terraces. Erosion and collapse produce other landforms too: Hananda in Yaese, Okinawa, a Natural Monument, is a natural bridge about 30 m long left by the erosion and collapse of the limestone.

Agency for Cultural Affairs records sometimes call the same stone coral limestone.

In walls and stonework

Most of Okinawa's house enclosures and stone structures are built of it. At the Yagi family residence in Yaese, completed in 1952, both the hinpun, the screen wall between gate and house, and the surrounding stone wall are of dressed blocks quarried locally at Minatogawa. The hinpun is 3.6 m long and 1.6 m high and includes stones close to 3 m in length.

Sometimes the bedrock itself is shaped. At the Iedonai Garden in Naha, a Place of Scenic Beauty, a basin-like pond and stone bridges were carved down into the limestone, a layout unlike gardens on the main Japanese islands.

At castle sites (gusuku), it pays to notice the stone. At Uegusuku Castle on Kumejima, coral limestone blocks appear only around the gate of the innermost enclosure; the rest of the walls are of platy pyroxene andesite gathered nearby.
