What zashiki-kazari means
Zashiki-kazari is the collective term for the fixtures of a reception room in the Shoin-zukuri style: the Tokonoma alcove for hanging scrolls and flowers, the chigaidana of staggered shelves, the Tsukeshoin, a built-in desk projecting toward the veranda, and the chōdaigamae, an ornamental doorway to a storeroom. They are grouped on one wall or on adjoining walls.
The fixtures are said to have arisen in the Muromachi period as places for displaying paintings and craft objects imported from China. In time they moved away from the practical role of display, and the placing of alcove, shelves, desk and doorway became fixed as a mark of formality for rooms used for audiences and receiving guests. Later houses usually omitted the ornamental doorway and kept the alcove, shelves and desk, a combination carried into modern Japanese-style houses. Nara City's commentary on the Imanishi family shoin lists the alcove and shelves among the features that distinguish the shoin style from the older shinden style.
Reading the records and the room
Records either refer to zashiki-kazari as a whole or list the individual fixtures. The detached wing of the Nakahara family house in Niigata has three rooms: an eight-mat room with zashiki-kazari, a six-mat room and a small two-mat room, and is recorded as showing the development of a great headman's residence in the modern era. The first room of the Kuro-shoin at Nijo Castle in Kyoto has an ornamental doorway and staggered shelves, their panels and doors painted as part of the room's wall paintings.
On site, look at the main wall of the room and see how alcove, shelves and desk are laid out. Where a record says only zashiki-kazari, check photographs or repair reports to see which fixtures are present before describing them.
